Giving is Living...The Birth of Spanda Inc.
As a practicing optometrist in the Cedar Rapids, Iowa, area for over 25 years and building a private practice serving over 10,000 patients with comprehensive eye care services, Dr. DeAnn Fitzgerald asked the question, "Should I be doing more?".
An Idea is Born...
In early 2006, the "seed" of doing more bloomed into the creation of the nonprofit, Spanda Inc. Spanda is based on the concept that "it takes only a single idea or action to move the world".
With that thought, Dr. Fitzgerald sponsored two mission trips to Kenyan villages. Through fundraising efforts and her own generosity, an eye/health care clinic was built with local Kenyan villagers trained to operate it. Currently in partnership with a local Rotary Club, a well is being drilled which will offer a fresh water supply to the clinic.
Through her optometric private practice, Dr. Fitzgerald saw patients with more than just routine eye care needs. Wanting to provide services that combined the expertise of optometry with occupational therapy, she opened a one-of-a-kind clinic, Cedar Rapids Vision In Motion, in 2008. The clinic provides vision wellness and rehabilitation services to all individuals regardless of age or personal/financial situation.
